Glengoyne Distillery

Based in the Highland region of Scotland near Glasgow, the Glengoyne distillery was founded in 1833 by George Connell, and Ian Macleod Distillers currently own it. Glengoyne produces both single malt and blended whisky.

The water used to make Glengoyne’s whisky comes from Loch Lomond, and the barley is sourced from local farms. The distillery uses both peated and unpeated malt in its whisky production.

The Glengoyne distillery is located in the Highland region of Scotland, about 20 miles north of Glasgow. It is situated at the foot of the Southern Highlands, near the town of Dumgoyne.

This beautiful distillery is surrounded by idyllic scenery, and it is a popular tourist destination. Visitors to the distillery can tour the facilities, learn about the whisky-making process, and sample some of the products.

The Glengoyne distillery produces both single malt and blended whisky. The single malt is made from 100% malted barley, and it is aged for a minimum of 10 years in oak casks. The blended whisky is made with a combination of malted and unmalted barley, and it is typically aged for 3-5 years.

The distillery is owned by Scotland’s Ian Macleod distillers who are an independent family-run business with the perfect balance of distilled brands. They are not just a malt master but also create fantastic rum, gin, and vodka.

Single Malt Whiskies

Glengoyne’s flagship whisky is the 10-Year-Old Single Malt, which is a Highland malt whisky that has been aged for at least ten years in ex-bourbon barrels. The Glengoyne 10-Year-Old is a smooth and light whisky with citrus and honey notes with a taste of brazil nuts and soft oak.

Glengoyne’s 12-year-old is a combination of first-fill sherry, first-fill bourbon and refill casks giving that fruity Glengoyne style we love. Expect a nose of lemon zest, honey and a scent of coconut, with a taste of toffee apples, ginger, orange and cinnamon spice. The signature sherry wood brings intensity and richness, while first-fill bourbon casks add notes of citrus and vanilla.

Other popular Glengoyne whiskies include the 18-Year-Old (features in our Taste Talk Kit), which has been aged for at least eighteen years in ex-bourbon barrels; and the 21-Year-Old, which is a Highland single malt that has been aged for at least twenty-one years in ex-bourbon barrels.

Glengoyne also produces a number of limited edition and special release whiskies, such as the Glengoyne Cask Strength Batch 4, which is a single malt whisky that has been aged for at least ten years in ex-bourbon barrels and not substantially diluted after its storage in casks; and the Glengoyne Teapot Dram Batch 3, which is a single malt whisky that has been finished in ex-sherry casks.

Glengoyne Distillery Tours

The Glengoyne Distillery offers a number of different tours and whisky-tasting experiences, depending on your interests and time constraints. The core tour is the Classic Tour, which lasts for approximately 45 minutes and includes a guided tour of the Glengoyne distillery site, a tutored whisky tasting, and a complimentary dram.

For those interested in a more in-depth look at the whisky-making process, the Provenance Tour lasts for approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and includes a guided tour of the distillery, a tutored whisky tasting, and a complimentary Glengoyne 10-Year-Old whisky miniature. The Provenance Tour also gives you the opportunity to explore the Glengoyne warehouses and learn about the different types of barrels used in whisky maturation.

For those interested in a behind-the-scenes look at the Glengoyne distillery, the Masterclass Tour lasts for approximately 2 hours and includes a guided tour of the distillery, a tutored whisky tasting, and a complimentary whisky miniature. The Masterclass Tour also gives you the opportunity to explore the Glengoyne warehouses and learn about the various barrels and different stages in whisky maturation, as well as getting an in-depth look at the distillation process.

The Glengoyne Distillery also offers a number of specialised tours, including the History Tour, the Cooperage Experience, and the Warehousing Experience. These tours must be booked in advance and are subject to availability.

Glengoyne Whisky Shop

The Glengoyne Whisky Shop stocks a wide range of Glengoyne bottles, as well as a selection of whisky merchandise. There is also a small tasting room where you can sample a selection of Glengoyne whiskies before you buy. You can also personalise your very own whisky or gift one to a friend (as long as they are over the legal drinking age of course).
